Expectations on books, movies, music--much of art is lost or never purely enjoyed because of all of this bullshit.
I would encourage everyone to minimize expectation that is built up in your head for any type of art you encounter. things are said, ideas are formed that are powerful, and truths aren't less true because they came from an artist who "sucks".

well on to my main point. I was listening to Ray Charles the other day and realizing, deeper, how amazing he was as an artist. It's one thing to have it be told to you by all the magazines and critiques and friends recommending things around you, but it's another to recognize it on your own terms.

Don't just agree with what you've heard is good. discover it for yourself.
